Paul's Core-Experience
What follows is a transcripted account taken from the tape recordings my brother Paul Osborn had made to document his own experiences.
Paul Osborn:
“At around 11 a.m. on 7th June, 1991, I was sitting at home alone in the living room. It was a warm, sunny day . . . totally quiet.
All morning I had been suffering with a bad cough and a burning sensation in my chest. I thought it was something like bronchitis coming on, or maybe an inflammation of the lungs. There was also a tightening in my chest.
As I said it was a nice sunny day, and everything was peaceful and calm. At this time I had been out of work a good five months, so everyday I was quite relaxed. I was left on my own, to do my own thing.
Everyday I listened to music that – although I didn't know it then – was very emotional and hypnotic music. It was mostly music by Vangelis and some slow, moody orchestral music by Prokofiev.
My days were always spent in this atmosphere . . . always a mood which was slow, easy and relaxed. Anyway, I sat down to read a book . . . I think the book was called The Messianic Legacy. [1]
After about half an hour I began to feel tired, and on this particular day – and because I was so relaxed – I had to put the book down. I lay on the sofa and I instantly drifted into a deep sleep.
All I remember before waking was this dream – although there seemed to be a lot of other things going on before I had this dream, but this is really hazy and I can’t really remember.
A portion of this dream though was very vivid as if I was in another place, and this place was a lecture hall . . . an old, grand Victorian type building - but there was something modern about this place as well. It was as if the building had been taken over by a modern TV company and they had ‘set-up’ their broadcasting equipment within this lecture hall. It was some kind of scientific demonstration . . . something like the programme ‘Tomorrow's world’ - and that they planned to broadcast something special from this old building. So there was this element of modern technology in a grand old lecture hall.
I was observing these proceedings from the point of view of the audience. The audience surrounded me . . . although it seemed as if this “show” was for my benefit alone. There was a lecture stage in front of us – and a man I will call ‘the lecturer’ [2] was standing in the middle of it. There was a partition wall to the right of him . . . like a screen or a makeshift prop. At the bottom, protruding from it was a pipe, and it was a few inches up from the floor . . . about ankle height to this person who was giving the demonstration. The pipe was spinning very fast on its axis. The lecturer's first words were: “Let me demonstrate how my hand can pass through this TV set.”
The television was on a tripod stand and was situated to the man's left. To his right, stood the thin, screen-like partition wall. He went on: “In order to do this, I must cause my body to vibrate.”
With these words, he backed himself up against the partition wall, and placed his right ankle against the rapidly spinning ‘pipe-like’ tube.
My vision ‘zoomed-in’ on this scene like a ‘Tele-photo lens,’ and I observed the lecturer’s lower right leg and foot – shudder and vibrate - due to being ‘jammed’ against the rotating pipe.
In fact his foot was just a blur. I then saw his hand pass through the TV set, and the image of his arm through it was like the snow effect that you get between channels. I could just make out the shape of his arm through the TV set, but the rest of him was as clear as normal.
I then began to feel the same sensation that I imagined this man was obviously feeling. I then suddenly realised that my body was his body! And as I awoke slowly from the dream, I was still feeling the same sensations. I woke up completely but I stayed where I was, I did not move, I just lay there – I did not move a muscle, and I never opened my eyes. I don’t think I was even breathing, or if I was, it was the shallowest breathing ever . . . I couldn’t even feel my heart beating! My body was practically dead to everything but my mind was as sharp as a razor.
I then felt a tingling, numb sensation in my lower left leg, which became a vibrating feeling.
My first thought was that it was ‘pins and needles’ from bad circulation. The vibrations then spread up my legs . . . up my body to my head. It felt more concentrated around my spine.
I was completely numb without feeling. And then with this final feeling of letting go of everything, there was this ‘rumbling sound.’ It got stronger . . . fading in as if a tuning fork had been struck, but without the ‘ting’ sound of the tuning fork . . . just a fading in of the tone. It then became a roar, not unlike a loud vacuum cleaner . . . but not just at my spine. I felt it all over the part of my body. It was as if it was cutting a band, horizontally, as it moved slowly through the length of my body. With this terrific noise which accompanied it, it rose up to my neck, then my head. The noise went into my head and the pressure of it was fantastic.
Anyway the procedure of this energy-wave had reached my head and suddenly there was a blinding white light . . . like a shower of sparks expanding from the centre of my head. It suddenly exploded in a flash of white light, filling my head with a sound – not unlike a resonating guitar string or an electrical, mechanical hum. The pressure in my head due to this pitched drone was quite intense – but not at all uncomfortable. At the same time, my entire body began to vibrate like an electric current – present at every point. It was like a “million volts” were passing through my body – but without the pain. The energy in my head began to shift down my spine, taking with it the ‘drone’ which decreased in aural volume and pressure. The shift was slow and carried down to my toes, cutting through each section of my body on it’s course, like a rumbling, moving, earthquake . . . shaking – though it seemed – the very molecular structure of my ‘being’ at the point of it’s path.
When the energy reached my toes, it moved slowly back to my head again, taking the same time to do so, bringing with it – the humming, droning pressure. It increased in volume as it reached my ears. This noise is so difficult to describe, it oscillates . . . pulsates . . . it’s a totally electrical noise.
The best way to describe this is the famous clip in the classic film Metropolis, where the female robot is either sitting or standing, and these “electrical hoops” of energy are passing back and forth along the length of the robot’s body. But as the hoops pass each other – one coming up and one going down – there's a ‘flamming’ sound or a ‘phasing – flanging’ sound. The energy in my body was very much like this, because it split into two “hoops” of energy; one going down to my feet as the other one went up to my head.
When they reached the extremities of my body they then reversed direction, both alternating and passing each other in the middle. As the ‘energy hoops’ passed, the sound was really weird because of the ‘phasing effect.’ The two oscillations bounced through each other, and this phasing was probably produced by both energies coming together and cancelling the other out as they passed . . . a ‘phase cancellation – sound.’
While all this was going on my body felt like it was vibrating . . . like my molecular structure was being shaken apart – not violently, but by very fine vibrations.
Where each of these ‘energy hoops’ passed - that was where I felt as if the molecules of my body were being disintegrated and reassembled in their wake. These “hoops” felt like they were cutting through my body . . . I say hoops because it’s the only way I can describe them. It’s a subjective mental picture of the sensation, which is really difficult to convey . . . I have to use mental imagery to communicate what it was like. This “scanning” lasted about half a minute, and cycled from head to toe exactly four times. All the while, my eyes did not open once, nor did I move a muscle, partly because I didn't want to disturb the process of this strange experience. The energy rested in my head after completing the fourth “scan” where it then began to fade.
After a long while, I got up from the sofa, slowly, after opening my eyes. The ‘vibrational’ feeling over my entire body – present at the same time, but somewhat softer or finer than the “energy-scan” – had subsided into a warm ‘tingling-glowing’ sensation, which lasted for another hour or so. During this time, I felt dizzy.
The excitement on that day was just phenomenal . . . I have never been that excited about anything in my entire life. And after telling others this experience, I knew that they could never comprehend what was for me an enormous event.
Words do not do it justice. This experience was analysed by myself as it occurred, with total consciousness and objectivity, but with also dumbfounded curiosity. I was as clear headed and awake as I am now while I contemplate these words.
This was not a subjective experience it seemed almost mechanical in its process.
My subsequent feelings about this experience was that it was painless, being more ecstatic . . . fantastic. I felt privileged to have had this experience. It’s like living for thirty years and not knowing your own body . . . like your body has a secret it keeps from you, that it does this all the time or is capable of doing this when it wants to – whether you like it or not.
I feel that some of these ‘hidden’ aspects of my body are not alien to me, but that they have a mind of their own. My own mind observed this experience with total objectivity as if my body had another mind that was controlling it . . . and that it was going about this process in such a non-plussed way . . . that it was used to doing this, and that it couldn’t care less if my mind was awake to witness it happening or not. It was just carrying out this process . . . that is how I felt . . . that there was all this “machinery” going on in ‘automatic pilot’.”
Gary:
This was Paul’s first experience of something he first referred to as an “Unknown Energy.”
For Paul, it was the most important event in his life.
It was some time later that Paul remembered some additional information regarding his ‘Core Experience:’
Paul had told me that his shallow breathing and imperceptible heartbeat was an important key to unlocking the mystery behind the ‘energy phenomenon’ he experienced that day. He told me that he was under so deep that he was "almost dead . . . like a near-death experience,” he said.
Paul told me that when he was going through the experience consciously, that his "heart beat and breathing was almost zero.”
Sometime later I discovered Paul’s thoughts corroborated in a book I had purchased: KundalinI: The Evolutionary Energy in Man by Gopi Krishna.
Paul also said that as the energy began to fade, he then realised that the normal sounds from around him and those in the street had been missing throughout the experience because their returning surprised him. He said it was as if some hermetically sealed ‘bell-jar’ had been slowly removed from around his head that had previously shut out all the audible sounds that one usually hears coming from the external world. He said he felt as if his body and his normal senses had "emerged from a vacuum.”
He also mentioned that the symptoms of bronchitis he had earlier in the day had completely gone. He felt as if the atoms of his body had been ‘cleansed’ or ‘corrected’ in some way as the energy seemed to cut its way through his body, and as to this, Paul would give this analogy:
Imagine a load of Ping-Pong balls stacked together in a box; and also imagine that each of these balls has a metal spot on its surface. Now because all the balls have been thrown in the box at random, all the metal spots on the balls are all pointing in different directions. Now imagine that a long magnet; a rod that had a strong magnetic pull, was drawn over the lid of the box as if it was scanning it. Of course the metal spot on all the Ping-Pong balls in the box would immediately react to the pull of the rod’s magnetic force, and so all the balls would instantly turn so that their metal spot would be facing upwards towards the rod – i.e., all the spots on the balls would all be facing one way . . . synchronised.
I would ask that the reader keep this analogy in mind, as it is an important clue as to what Kundalini is all about.
Now the hypnagogic dream or vision that led up to the experience is also important. Later I discovered that the hypnagogic dream Paul had, and the hypnagogic dream I had before my own Kundalini experience some two years later, held many details that gave us additional information about this ‘Mid-point’ or Neutral Point in consciousness experienced as the hypnagogic state.
I will give my account of my own core experience later. (See here).

2. Paul later said that this lecturer looked very much like the British psychic Geoff Boltwood. But at the time he had this experience, he had never heard of Geoff Boltwood – and even though Geoff had been on TV, Paul could not recall having ever seen Geoff Boltwood before meeting him a year later in 1992.
