Invisible Headband
Paul:
“As the weeks went by, other strange things were happening. As I was reading, I would often feel this tightening . . . like a headband round my forehead and this pressure, especially between my eyes. It felt like one of those sweatbands that tennis players wear. It was as if I was wearing one of those, and someone was twisting a stick through the back of it, slowly like a garrotte. It got tighter and tighter. It didn’t hurt; it was just a sensation of tightening. This happened quite often, especially when I was relaxed. The more I relaxed the more this feeling would come on.”
Gary:
I discovered that this tightening sensation around the head is usually reported by psychics or by those who are showing the first signs of psychic or clairvoyant ability - something also mentioned by Hereward Carrington, as we will see later. But before we look at what Carrington had to say, I want to show another example that is connected with the so-called UFO phenomenon.
Some years after Paul talked about his “headband” experience, I bought John Spencer’s book Gifts of the Gods. I found a reference to this “headband” sensation in an account by Elsie Oakensen. Elsie’s story is well known in UFO research because the time and place of the events, which she claims took place, were rather extraordinary to say the least.
John Spencer tells us that on November 22, 1978, Elsie saw a “smooth, grey, dumb-bell-shaped object” hovering above the A5 at Weedon. This is strange in itself . . . but Elsie was driving along this road at 5.30 p.m. during the rush hour!
The A5 was very busy at that time . . . but no one else had reported seeing the object. This may seem very strange to people who do not usually have these kinds of experiences. I feel that the reason why this object was not reported by the other drivers on the road was because they didn’t see it . . . their minds not tuned to the 'frequency' from which the object was operating.
Elsie saw it because she was "allowed" or was meant to see it, and so her mind went through some kind of ‘frequency shift’ so that not only was she able to see it, but she could also have some experience or communion with it. It later came to pass that another driver (a woman) had reported seeing this object or something similar to Elsie’s description around about that time. Again, because the person’s consciousness was somehow tuned to its frequency? To mention the nature of ‘frequency shifts’ at this time may be a bit premature, and so using the insights that have come to me since, I will try and explain this in more detail later.
Elsie’s strange experiences didn’t stop there. She later found that fifteen minutes of time had been lost on that journey which she said should have taken fifteen minutes but had taken half an hour. The next thing she noted was significant as regards Paul’s “headband” experience:
‘Later that evening, at about 7 p.m., Elsie felt a tightening sensation around her head; it reminded her of that similar feeling earlier in the day.’ [1]
To emphasise this point, I will include here another piece from John Spencer’s account of the Oakensen case, as it has some significance regarding other things we will be looking at later.
‘Elsie has an interpretation of these events, which she herself is sensible enough to recognise as speculative only. Elsie believes that she was somehow selected by the UFO at lunch time, that she was scanned by it during the encounter and then released later in the evening, when the sensation briefly returned.
Elsie believed that she might have been given some sort of message, which may not come to the fore for many years. She also believed that during the encounter she was examined, but stresses that she believes the examination was ‘spiritual’ rather than medical. The possibility that the ‘message’, still to come to the fore, is the development of her spiritual abilities is irresistible. Such development was to follow. And Elsie believes that her developed abilities are connected to her UFO encounter.’ [2]
You can see why my brother and I first related our experiences to the UFO phenomenon. Although the UFO phenomenon seems to play a large part in our experiences and in these accounts that have subtle similarities, we both feel that the picture that is now emerging encompasses a far larger picture. We are not playing down the UFO thing, on the contrary, we feel that the UFO phenomenon is fundamentally linked to all paranormal and mystical experience . . . but everything is related to this 'energy phenomenon'. All these experiences are complex and maintain that an “intelligence” is involved somewhere behind the scenes – perhaps the Source of our own consciousness, intelligence and creativity itself – but it all depends on the way these experiences and events are interpreted.
By showing our accounts, my intention here is to show the broad spectrum of these experiences and how they are subtly but also profoundly connected.
I now understand that the 'head-band' experience is something that is often related to the opening of the so-called ‘Third Eye’ – often associated with the Pineal gland – which many would say is accomplished by one’s level of consciousness reaching the Centre of the sixth Chakra vortex, known in Hindu Mysticism as the Brow or ajna chakra.
This will all be explained later – suffice to say that it is the use of this Chakra that allows our perceptions and experiences of reality and "other realities" to be viewed through this “paranormal lens” or filter. Maybe this is why Elsie Oakensen was able to see the UFO when others around were unable to: she had been given an extra boost of energy so as to perceive and experience more energy and information about our reality. In effect, one could say that Elsie was receiving this extra energy/information through the centre of the sixth Chakra that had been activated earlier on in the day.
How and why the sixth Chakra was activated and utilised that day is another question and maybe one that we should now ask Elsie herself. There is of course good evidence to suggest that the agenda of the intelligence/s behind the UFO phenomenon is one that involves the raising of human consciousness. Anyway back to Paul’s accounts . . .
Visions of Small coloured lights
Paul:
“Some weeks after, I would see these little tiny lights . . . white lights, like a spark . . . a bright white spark. They would just keep appearing in front of my eyes. Wherever I looked . . . if I was talking to someone there would be this “ping” of light and then it was gone.
"When the light was gone, it would leave a negative after-image of itself. It was a very strange visual thing that I had never experienced before . . . but there were variations.
"One time I remember, as I was reading a book, there was suddenly one of these sparks. Instead of it being one of the tiny sparks . . . it burst and illuminated the page with a violet colour like ultra-violet light! It shocked me so much that I jumped . . . and it was after this that I knew something really strange was happening to me.”
Gary:
It was at this time that I also saw “pings of light,” and they would always be in my left eye. In my experience, they were usually very white, but sometimes they would be a dark blue. They would often leave an after image that could be best described – as like an ‘eclipse’ – where the circle of light would then turn black, but with a halo of white light around it. At times I would be reading, or talking to someone when I would suddenly see this “ping” of light. I often had the immediate thought that what I had just read or heard was true, and that this flash of light in my left eye was some kind of confirmation. I later discovered that this is a common feature in these kinds of experiences, and that again, this was one of the first symptoms of a newly-held psychic ability.
Here’s a few more passages from Hereward Carrington’s book: (a subchapter called ‘Symptoms of Oncoming Mediumship’.) In this subchapter, Carrington clearly refers to the “headband” experience and lights in front of the eyes:
‘A peculiar lightness and buzzing is sometimes experienced in the head, together with a sense of numbness in the hands and arms, and sometimes in the feet and legs. The respiration seems to become slower, and so does the heart. Tiny lights and spots and light, or dark spots, appear in the air at a distance of one or two feet in front of the subject.
'A peculiar pressure is sometimes experienced on the top of the head or on the base of the brain, or in the solar plexus; “swishing” sounds, as of the sea breaking upon the sea-shore may be heard and a sensation that something inside the head is going round and round in spirals. The head, the hands and sometimes the whole body break out into a profuse perspiration at this point. These are the first sensations of oncoming Mediumship. Very often they are not pleasant for the first few weeks but if this period be passed, the unpleasant sensations will as a rule vanish, and the subject will then develop true Mediumship of one character or another.’ [3] (My Emphasis)
Beam or Flash of Light
Paul:
“One night whilst reading in my living room at home, a tremendous white flash of light appeared in the sky which I saw through the window facing me. The light was similar to a flashbulb from a camera and seemed to be beamed right at my head in what looked like ‘concentric circles.’ I froze for a second and then jumped with surprise.”
Gary:
This particular account ammuses me because it was many years later that I saw a film starring John Travolta, Phenomenon, in which he played a guy who gets “zapped” by a beam of light from the sky. After this, he begins to have insights into things and his mind becomes hungry for more knowledge. He also begins to display ESP and Telekinesis – i.e., mind over matter. I found it amusing because I could see the correlations between what was happening to this character and what had happened to my brother and I. It seems that who ever wrote the story for this film had an insight into this ‘energy phenomenon’ and its effects.
Also there is the story of Travis Walton an alleged “alien abductee,” whose experiences began after he also got “zapped” by a light in the sky. In fact, a film had been made about his experiences called Fire from the Sky.
When Paul first spoke about his experiences he often used the term “zapped” to explain how this energy would manifest itself to him, or within him. It would be interesting if we finally discovered that all these experiences of flashes of light – sometimes from the sky – were linked to this ‘energy phenomenon’ or what some term a ‘Kundalini Awakening.’ Even Robert Monroe writes that his first OBE experience seemed to have been initiated by a beam of light from the sky, and his account of his first experience is very similar to Paul’s core experience. (See here).
John Keel, the veteran journalist writer, and paranormal investigator who inspired the American TV series Kolchak, The Night Stalker in the early ’70s, often wrote about these flashes of light – especially in UFO accounts . . .
‘The phenomenon takes yet another form. The witness is stepping out of his door, or getting out of his automobile, when there is a sudden burst of light ‘like a flash gun going off.’ No photographer or camera is visible. There is no sudden paralysis or ill effects. The witness just scratches his head in bewilderment and goes about his business. However, those who see these flashes have usually had psychic experiences previously. They have seen a UFO, a monster, or a ghost, or they are gifted with ESP or precognition.’ [4]
. . . and even John Keel experienced these flashes of light himself:
‘I thought of them as ‘psychic flashes’ because very often my phone would ring immediately after I saw one.
‘ . . . Suddenly there were brilliant flashes outside my window, although there were no photographers, or people of any kind, in the courtyard or across the way.
‘ . . . Were they a part of some subtle programming process? My life has gone through many abrupt changes, and each major change has been preceded by some form of inexplicable phenomena. In observing other witnesses, this also seems to be true in their lives. Are these things clues to a psychic force which controls us all?’ [5]
We will look at some more of these strange accounts by John Keel later.
Recently I have visually experienced ‘black blobs,’ which seem to cover, or be a part of whatever I am looking at. It is almost like the visual “eclipse” I mentioned earlier, but more intense. This has happened only a few times and I shall give my account of these later as I want to keep to the time sequence in which all these experiences happened. But in the mean-time here’s another passage from a piece in Carrington’s book called ‘Colours and Voices’ in which he speaks of these lights again – especially the “blobs” as I like to call them:
‘In the early stages of the development, mediums very often see colours of various shades and hues in space before them. They are unable to tell whether or not these colours have any definite shape or outline; they seem to possess an odd, irregular shape of their own; something like a large blot of ink.’ [6]
